The U.S. economy may not be as strong as it used to be, but it’s certainly getting a ‘lift’ from cosmetic surgery – facial cosmetic surgery to be precise. The number of men and women turning to Botox, fillers, laser hair removals and other procedures involving the face has skyrocketed to a level the industry has never seen before. In fact, for the first time in six years, the number of people opting for facial plastic surgery is up to a record high, reports the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. Leading the way of course was Botox, the number one cosmetic procedure in the country, and especially here in New York.
There are many reasons why a patient might opt for Botox or other non-invasive or invasive surgical procedures. The most common is the tell tale sign of aging – wrinkles. Botox is especially appealing to individuals who want to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines without having to undergo invasive or permanent treatments. The effects of Botox last about four months, after which the patient can choose to either get more Botox or discontinue. The treatment works by basically reducing activity in the facial muscles where wrinkles are prone to develop. Men and women as young as 18 can get Botox, giving themselves a more youthful appearance as well as the look of smoother skin.
The ASPS report also showed that that soft tissue fillers, chemical peels, laser hair removal, and microdermabrasion were also on the rise. As far as surgical facial treatments go, the most popular included rhinoplasty, eyelid surgery and facelifts.
“Our annual statistics serve as a snapshot regarding the plastic surgery industry,” explained Dr. Gregory Evans, President of ASPS. “For the third consecutive year, the overall growth in cosmetic surgery continues to be driven by a significant rise in minimally-invasive procedures, while surgical procedures remain relatively stable. We are aware, however, that patients who begin with less invasive treatments with a plastic surgeon may opt for more invasive, surgical procedures once required.”
Additionally, the report found that reconstructive plastic surgery procedures were also on the rise. Nasal reconstruction treatments are also very popular, helping those who have been involved in accidents that disfigured their nose, those who are not happy with their previous rhinoplasty surgery, and those who suffer from nasal problems, such as a deviated septum.
The ASPS strongly believes this rise in plastic surgery trends will continue in the future. With the number of baby boomers turning to face lifts and eyelid lifts increasing, as well as people who just want to look and feel younger, facial plastic surgery is becoming as popular as liposuction and is attracting people of all demographics.
