Botox and Fillers: What You Need to Know

Botox and Fillers | Dr. Leonard Grossman M.D. | NY

With so many options for skin rejuvenation out there, it can be difficult to know what the best option is for you. Dr. Leonard Grossman, M.D. offers some information for patients.

Juvederm and Restylane are commonly used hyaluronic acid fillers that can treat fine lines and wrinkles. Botox is another treatment that is frequently used to treat unsightly wrinkles. Botox treats wrinkles by targeting and disabling underlying muscle activity, thus reducing the appearance of wrinkles. Botox is a neuroblocker, meaning that it prevents the muscles from contracting. Patients who have crow’s feet or furrows can see near immediate and excellent results from the use of Botox, due to its ability to stop the muscle activity that causes these fine lines and wrinkles. Hyaluronic acid fillers, on the other hand, treat wrinkles by “filling them out.”

Juvederm is often injected into areas of the face where there are moderate to severe facial wrinkles. Juvederm adds volume to skin and can help patients achieve a beautiful youthful glow. Juvederm is FDA-approved and can treat smile lines, corner lines, marionette lines, and vertical lip lines. The results can last 6 months or more, but it is important to develop a treatment plan with your plastic surgeon in order to ensure the best and long lasting results.

Restylane is very similar to Juvederm. Dr. Leonard Grossman, M.D., Brooklyn plastic surgeon explains that Restylane and Juvederm are “very similar in the way they are made in the laboratory.” Dr. Grossman explains that Restylane and Juvederm can both be used to treat wrinkles as well as correcting a crooked nose or increasing the fullness of the lips. The fillers can also be used to treat cellulite. It is Dr. Grossman’s opinion that Restylane may last quite a bit longer than Juvederm as it is a more robust form of Stabilized Hyaluronic Acid.

Botox, Dysport, Xeomin and Myobloc (let’s include them in one category: Botox) treat fine lines and wrinkles, but they do so by blocking muscle activity. Your plastic surgeon will inject Botox or the other neurotoxic agents beneath the skin in to the muscle layer in order to disable the muscle and eliminate movement, thereby the wrinkles.

So which treatment should patients use?

Botox is an excellent choice for patients who want to eliminate crow’s feet or frown lines. For patients with wrinkles in other areas, or for patients who want to correct defects in their nose, or who would like fuller lips or more fullness anywhere else, fillers might be a better solution.

Botox, like Restylane and Juvederm require maintenance injections in order for patients to continue to see the youthful results the product provides. Speaking to your doctor about a course of treatment along with having a discussion about your aesthetic goals is important to ensure that you achieve desired results.

Dr. Leonard Grossman, M.D. was one of the first practitioners in the world to use both Botox and fillers, and in particular hyaluronic acid-based fillers.
