Options in Breast Augmentation. Which is Right for Me?

For Centuries full, voluptuous and proportional breasts have been associated with fertility, beauty and sex. Ancient ruins and their frescos, works of the “great masters” and today’s Victoria Secret models all seem to have have a lot in common. Unfortunately not many women have breasts which they take pride in. So if you are or one of these women or know some one who needs a bit of improvement continue reading.

Most people think that if you want larger breasts, saline implants or silicone implants must be used with the traditional approach. However, patients have more options than ever before. Majority still haven’t heard of Fat Transfer or Transumbilical Breast Augmentation which are also options that breast augmentation patients have. Determining which kind of procedure is best for you can be difficult on your own and internet doesn’t always help, in fact it can make matters even more confusing. Each patient’s needs are unique, depending on their desires and anatomical presentation. Very few plastic surgeons perform Breast Fat Transfer and Transumbilical Breast Augmentation at this time. These procedures require specialized training. equipment and of course excellent manual dexterity. Dr. Leonard Grossman is a NYC plastic surgeon who has been performing Breast Augmentation for over two decades. He is a pioneer in latest procedures and can offer his clients everything from implants to the latest fat transfer surgical options.

So, what is the difference between breast augmentation with implants, fat transfer, and transumbilical breast augmentation? Here are some key facts.

Breast Augmentation with Silicone Implants. Silicone breast implants are  favored by some over saline implants because they are “thought to have” a more natural look and feel. Silicone implants come pre-filled with silicone gel and because of their large size require a generous incision on the breast or the armpit for placement. Silicone implants are only approved by the FDA for women over 21 years of age. In order to detect a rupture of the silicone implant, the woman must undergo an MRI Scan every three years after the initial placement. Breakage of the silicone implants creates a more complicated situation with the clean up, which is never complete. Because of the incision on the breast, there is a limit to breast size that can be achieved this way.

Breast Augmentation with Saline Implants. Saline implants are filled with physiologic solution (same as in the hospital IV) to the desired volume once the implant has been properly placed. This means that saline implants are more adjustable than silicone implants and give patients more options with respect to sizing. Saline implant ruptures are easier to detect because the breast size will noticeably change. Saline implants are approved by the FDA for women 18 years of age and older, so more women are candidates for breast augmentation with saline.

Fat Transfer. During fat transfer breast augmentation, your surgeon will perform liposuction on an area of the body where you have unwanted fat and then transfer this processed and purified fat to your breast area. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, this type of surgery is ideal for women who only want one to one and a half cup change to the size of their breast. However, with a series of fat transfer procedures women can achieve almost any size breast desired. But not all women are candidates for this procedure. You must have enough fat in another area of your body in order to support successful transfer. For women who are candidates, fat transfer procedure is an excellent if not the best choice, in that it will help women achieve multiple esthetic goals at once, besides creating a completely natural breasts without any visible scarring, the overall shape of the body is markedly improved. The breasts are and will behave completely natural and no implants will need to be replaced. The procedure is without visible scars and recovery is extremely easy with patients going to work the very next day when performed by Dr. Leonard Grossman, who has been performing fat grafting for 23 years. His patients can be on the beach in about one week.

Transumbilical Breast Augmentation (TUBA). During a Transumbilical Breast Augmentation, no incision is made near or on the breast. Instead a very small incision is made inside the navel and a saline implant is delivered under the Pectorals Muscle using this method. This procedure has been found to result in shorter recovery times and require less anesthesia than other kinds of traditional breast augmentation surgery. Complications commonly encountered with traditional breast augmentation have been found to be almost non-existent or very infrequent with TUBA. According to Seminars in Plastic Surgery, patients can also achieve any breast size, because there is no incision on the breast to create tension. Transumbilical breast augmentation requires a surgeon who has the equipment and training for perform the procedure. Dr. Grossman has the largest series of TUBA patient in the world.
