Liposuction: Many Choices, but Which Option is Best for You?

Liposuction: Many Choices, but Which Option is Best for You?

Liposuction | Dr. Leonard Grossman M.D. | NY

There are many kinds of liposuction options currently available on the market. New developments to liposuction have made the procedure safer than ever, ensuring faster recovery and better results for patients. WebMD lists three major types of liposuction: tumescent liposuction, ultrasound-assisted liposuction, and laser-assisted liposuction. During tumescent liposuction, lidocaine and epinephrine are injected into the site and a tube is inserted to remove the fat. During ultrasound-assisted liposuction, an ultrasound is used to liquefy fat, thus making the fat easier to remove. Laser-assisted liposuction is similar to ultrasound-assisted liposuction, but a laser is used to liquefy the fat.

Dr. Leonard Grossman, M.D. has been performing liposuction for many years, and weighed in on which procedure is best for patients. While laser-assisted liposuction may initially sound appealing, due to the claims that the laser makes the fat easier to remove, Dr. Grossman doesn’t believe it is the best choice. He explains that the laser liquefies fat in an irregular and uneven manner, not always resulting in the most aesthetic results. Dr. Grossman also found that complications following laser-assisted procedures were higher. Furthermore, as much as 75% of patients were dissatisfied with their procedures when a laser was used.

Being the first American Plastic Surgeon to have used Ultrasound Assisted Liposuction since 1995, Dr. Grossman has concluded that the procedure has an unacceptably high rate of complications and should be used only in very difficult revision liposuction surgeries, where the associated risks maybe more acceptable.

Dr. Leonard Grossman uses “small cannula liposuction” on a Power Assisted Device. The procedure is safe, effective, and doesn’t require hospital admission in order to be performed. It also results in faster recovery for patients. According to the Journal of Cutaneous and Aesthetic Surgery, small cannula liposuction, while taking a longer period of time to perform than other forms of liposuction, it is the best choice for patients who want the safest and most precise fat removal procedure available. While small cannula liposuction can take as long as 2-3 hours for some patients, Dr. Grossman explains that some of his patients are able to leave surgery after as little as a half hour.

Small cannula liposuction can safely remove anywhere from 4 to 5 liters of fat. Generally, removing any more fat than this can be dangerous to the patient and result in further complications. Patients should also remember that liposuction is not meant to be a replacement for a weight loss regimen and healthy eating. Liposuction allows patients to sculpt their bodies, by removing relatively small amounts of unwanted fat from specific target areas. Small cannula liposuction is both safe and effective to accomplishing these ends.

Dr. Leonard Grossman explains that small cannula procedure allows him to remove fat easily from any area of the body. Patients do not have to wear compression garments and 95% of patients can return to work as early as the following day. Within a few days, most patients can return to the gym and resume normal life activities.
