New Year, New You

New Year, New You

New Year | Dr. Leonard Grossman M.D. | NY

Many of us start off the New Year with several resolutions. Lose weight, get a new job, lose weight, spend more time with loved ones, lose weight; get the picture? Losing weight is usually the number one goal for the New Year. But, as many of us already know, starting – and keeping – a regular exercise routine and healthy diet isn’t the easiest thing in the world to do.

Some of us will make a valiant effort and stick to our goals for a few weeks, while others keep postponing the dreaded “D-Day” (D, of course, standing for diet). But while these goals are almost certainly going to fail, there’s one way to make sure your resolution to look and feel your best is fulfilled – plastic surgery.

As the number of goals to lose weight goes up in the New Year, so does the number of plastic surgery procedures. Some people wait for January to embark on their path toward their preferred treatment, while many receive cosmetic enhancement certificates from loved ones over the holidays. But whatever has driven you to make the change for yourself, know that you are definitely not alone.

According to statistics found in a TIME article, the gift of cosmetic surgery truly is the gift that keeps on giving. The rate of plastic surgery “gifts” went up in 2013 between 20-35%, depending on the type of procedure and practice. Plastic surgeons also reported that their cosmetic surgery gift card sales also went up drastically.

Many of these gifts are coming in combo packages. We are seeing a lot more mother-daughter procedures and sister procedures, including laser hair removal, Botox, and even mommy makeover packages.

One of the reasons procedures are increasing at the start of the New Year is because there’s more time to recover due to holiday hours.

“People find themselves with a little more time off for recovery from surgical procedures,” said Dr. Terry Higgins. “It’s also party season, when everyone’s out and about and being seen more than normal. Or people may be seeing relatives they haven’t seen for a while. They want to look their best, so they get noninvasive quick fixes that can help them look good rapidly.”

With more time off due to the holidays, it’s also easier to get invasive procedures, which may involve longer recovery periods. Some treatments require at least one week of downtime to make sure the body is healing properly and to give the body adequate time for any swelling or bruising to diminish.

Counting Christmas holiday and New Years, prospective patients can take their vacations and take advantage of the closely paired holidays to enjoy their recovery without having to worry about going back to work. Once January comes around, patients will be able to debut their new physiques and confidence at work. What better way than to ring in the holidays with a new you?
