Most children who are born with “dumbo ears” or prominent ears can actually have them corrected non-surgically in the first 2 to 4 weeks of life, but too few doctors know that fact and never address this issue with the family. As these children grow and go to kinder garden or elementary school, they frequently become the focus of bullying and ridicule.
Otoplasty or an ear tuck, is a procedure in which prominent ears, shape and/or the size of the ear is changed, to better match the facial contour and proportions. The procedure is generally performed on children over the age of 8 and up into adulthood. In the majority of cases surgery is performed under local anesthesia, but can be done with twilight anesthesia as well.
Most patients are able to return to work in just two to three days with minimal discomfort. Results are permanent.
