Montag Misinformed About Liposuction

Liposuction is a great tool used by many women – and men – around the world to eliminate stubborn fat that does not respond to traditional exercise and diet methods. For years, individuals have struggled with nutrition, over exhausted themselves at the gym, and have tried endless diet pills only to see zero results  in the reduction of abnormal fat. They may already be in good shape, but try as they might, there are areas on their bodies that just do not respond. Liposuction targets these areas and gets rid of the fat the does not dissipate through other methods.

Given all the benefits of this popular plastic surgery treatment, it’s no wonder that many celebrities have turned to liposuction to look – and feel – their best. Yet, one particular celebrity seems to be misinformed about lipo and is looking to place blame on the plastic surgery treatment for her insecurities.

Former reality TV star Heidi Montag, who famously underwent  10 different plastic surgery procedures, including breast augmentation, facial plastic surgery, and of course, liposuction, appears to now be suffering from a problem that is very common in women her age – cellulite.  At 25 years of age, Montag admits she has recently developed cellulite in her legs and is so embarrassed, she rarely wears shorts so the dimples in her legs will not be revealed.

While there are many factors that can lead to the development of cellulite, including poor diet choices and genetics, Montag has attributed the cellulite to her liposuction procedure.

”I got cellulite after my lipo,” claims Montag.

It would seem Montag is wrong in her assumption. As an experienced plastic surgeon in New York, Dr. Leonard Grossman can tell you liposuction does not cause cellulite.  However, Montag may have already had an underlying and uneven layer of cellulite in her legs, and when she had liposuction to remove fat in the area, the dimples became more prominent. Or, perhaps she has lost elasticity in her skin or is just seeing the signs of inevitable genetic traits.

Between 80 to 90 percent of post-adolescent women have cellulite, so it may just be Montag’s time. Either way, if she is under the impression that liposuction gave her cellulite, she would have done well to research the treatment before undergoing plastic surgery.

It’s important for all plastic surgery patients to fully understand their procedures and have realistic expectations. As great as liposuction can be at eliminating fat and increasing self-confidence, it is not a miracle cure nor a means to lose weight. Liposuction results can be permanent, but that’s entirely up to the individual. A nutritionally-balanced diet and active lifestyle are key to enhancing the results of liposuction as well as maintaining the individual’s health overall.
